Night Shift is a first attempt by Ron Howard, in 1982, as a film director on the big screen, working along with Happy Days co-star Henry Winkler. The story centers around a business minded Wall Street burn out named Chuck, played by Henry Winkler, who decides on a career change that lands him in the New York City morgue as a day time attendant, which initially is a welcome change of pace from his former life as a stock broker. To complicate matters, Chuck is eventually promoted in his duties to become the supervisor of the night shift, in order to open up a space for his boss's nephew during the day shift. This unpleasant move becomes more of a problem for Chuck, once he learns that he is now stuck working along with the questionably rational Bill "Blaze" Blazejowski, played by Michael Keaton. When Chuck's neighbor, a prostitute named Belinda, played by Shelley Long, runs on hard times, this inspires both men to combine forces to turn the New York City morgue into the headquarters of their new entrepreneurial endeavor, as they attempt to run their own prostitution service. TV Guide notes that this was the best performance of Winkler's career as an actor. Critics also praised Michael Keaton for his strong performance in this comedic film.
