This cult classic was written, directed and co-produced by Don Coscarelli in 1979. The main character of the movie is the Tall Man which was played by Angus Scrimm and he continued playing this role in all of the Phantasm films that followed. It also stars Michael Baldwin as Mike Pearson, Bill Thornbury as Jody Pearson, Reggie Bannister as Reggie, Pat Roman as the Mega Dwarf and Kathy Lester as the Lavender Lady. The story begins with the untimely death of 24 year old Jody Pearson’s brother and parents. He is now left to raise Mike, his 13 year old brother by himself. When ice cream vendor Reggie and Jody get together for the funeral of a friend, they agree that the sudden deaths in this small California town are disturbing. It seems that since that the death rate has dramatically increased ever since the malevolent mortician known as the Tall Man arrived in town. As the toll of deaths continue to rise, young Mike has fears that his brother will be killed next and consults a local fortuneteller about his suspicions that the Tall Man is behind it all. To show the consequences of fear, the fortuneteller hands Mike a small box that immediately grips his hands. As his fear subsides, the box starts to release its grip. Mike realizes that he needs to warn his brother of the diabolical forces that are taking over the town. On his way to alert his brother, Mike is chased the Tall Man and his dwarves that are composed of the recently deceased bodies. Once he convinces his brother and Reggie that there are supernatural forces working against them; it is up to them to unmask the evil entities and put an end to it all. The first thing they have to do is find the gateway to the other world and the place to start the hunt is in the mausoleum.
