In Populaire, it is 1958 and Rose Pamphyle lives a boring, bland life filled with the expectations for women of her time. She still lives at home with her widower father and she is expected to marry a local mechanic's son. Wanting more, Rose applies for work as a secretary at an insurance agency. After she shows fantastically fast and accurate typing skills, she is hired for the job. Her boss, Louis Échard, soon learns that she's a terrible secretary, but he appreciates her so much that he trains her to win the 1959 New York International Speed Typing Contest.
