Watch Casa de mi Padre
This comic parody anchors its humor in the over-the-top campiness of a stereotypical Mexican soap opera combined with a classic spaghetti Western. Intentionally low production values, a psychedelic montage scene and the appearance of a mythical white jaguar, amongst other references, all pay tribute to these forms. However, you need not have ever watched a single telenovela or spaghetti Western to be in on the jokes.
Set in rural Mexico, it stars Will Ferrell as the innocent singing cowboy, Armando Alvarez, and Diego Luna as his successful, but unsavory, brother, Raul. The boys’ father (Pedro Armendáriz, Jr.) is jubilant upon Raul’s return to the family ranch as he not only arrives with the lovely Sonia (Genesis Rodriguez) but also promises to end the ranch’s financial woes.
Trouble quickly sets in when the true nature of Raul’s business dealings become apparent, and the family gets entangled with the ruthless Mexican drug lord, Onza (Gael García Bernal). To complicate matters further, Armando falls in love with Sonia.
Casa de mi Padre is a 2012 comedy. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.5 and a MetaScore of 52.
