In this documentary narrated by Walter Cronkite, he tells the story of life in rural America before 1935 when most farmers had no electricity. Families used kerosene lamps and heated water outside or on a coal stove. In 1935, this changed when then President Franklin Roosevelt created the Rural Electrification Administration Act. A 1939 government-financed film entitled "Power and the Land" to demonstrated how electricity changed the lives of the Parkinson family. This film pays tribute to the original movie and retells the story.
