Rogue Hostage, a 2021 action-packed thriller, tells the story of an ex-Marine, Kyle Snowden, played by Tyrese Gibson, whose plans of a peaceful life with his daughter are abruptly brought to a halt when he finds himself trapped in a convenience store with several hostages. What follows is a high-stakes, heart-pumping game of life and death as Kyle fights to protect the hostages from the ruthless criminal gang led by Eagan Raize, portrayed by Christopher Backus, who infiltrates the store in search of a valuable secret.

The movie begins with a glimpse into Kyle's idyllic life with his young daughter, struggling to make ends meet as a mechanic. Everything changes when he picks his daughter up from school and comes across a robbery that quickly turns into a hostage situation at the convenience store. Kyle's military training kicks in, and he manages to sneak into the store to assess the situation, making sure his daughter is safe outside. Eagan Raize, a man with a past connection to Kyle, and his crew take the store employees and customers hostage and set up explosive traps to keep the police at bay.

Kyle soon discovers that Eagan and his team are after a secret that one of the hostages has been hiding - a video that showed Eagan's criminal activities. Eagan is determined to get his hands on the video and will stop at nothing, even if it means putting the hostages at risk. Kyle now becomes the only hope for the hostages as he tries to outwit Eagan and his team while protecting the innocent people caught in the crossfire.

Rogue Hostage is not just about the thrilling action sequences; it also looks at the emotional struggles that Kyle faces. Kyle is not just fighting for his life and that of the hostages; he is also trying to redeem himself for past mistakes. The movie delves into Kyle's backstory, revealing why he left the Marines and his struggles with PTSD. The audience gets to see Kyle's pain and how he has been coping with it.

Apart from Gibson and Backus, the movie boasts an impressive supporting cast. John Malkovich is outstanding as Frank, the sheriff in charge of the situation. While he tries to solve the situation through conventional means, Malkovich's veterans' character shows that there is more to the hostage situation than meets the eye. Leslie Stratton and Holly Taylor give powerful performances as Tara and Sasha, two of the hostages who stand out amid the chaos. Their quick thinking and defiance put Kyle's plan into motion and take the movie to another level.

The movie's director, Jon Keeyes, does an excellent job of keeping the audience engaged with intense action and thought-provoking dialogue. The film never feels dull, thanks to its thrilling pacing and editing. The movie's score is also noteworthy, serving as a fantastic backdrop for the action of the film. The cinematography is top-notch, with the convenience store as the primary setting for the movie, creating a claustrophobic atmosphere that adds to the movie's tension.

Rogue Hostage is a movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout its runtime, and despite its flaws, it delivers an intense and thrilling experience. Gibson's portrayal of Kyle is commendable, and Backus makes an excellent villain that balances calculation and insanity in equal measure. The movie may not be groundbreaking, but it is a solid action thriller that is worth checking out.

Rogue Hostage is a 2021 action movie. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 3.5.
