Chan Chen-Pang is the heir to a business fortune who falls in love with a Chinese courtesan, Fleur, he meets in Hong Kong in 1934. Chan decides that his future lies with Fleur, a match his family frown upon and forbid him to marry, deciding on a suicide pact the pair say they will meet in the afterlife. Fleur waits in Hell for 50 years, but Chan does not arrive. prompting Fleur to return as a spirit to the land of the living in a 1980s Hong Kong she no longer recognizes or understands.
