Saanjhbatir Rupkathara is a Bengali language movie belonging to the romantic genre, directed by debutante Abhijit Guha and Sudeshna Roy. The lead roles are played by two stalwarts of Bengali cinema, Soumitra Chatterjee, and Debshankar Haldar with a supporting cast comprising of Arpita Chatterjee, Indrani Halder, Biswajit Chakraborty, and Ananya Chatterjee.
The movie tells the story of two poets, widely acknowledged as the finest in the Bengali literature circle, Rudra and Partho, fictional characters loosely based on the renowned duo of Sunil Gangopadhyay and Nirendranath Chakraborty. Rudra, played by Soumitra Chatterjee, is the elder statesman, aloof and critical of contemporaries, while Partho, played by Debshankar Haldar, is a rebel who seems to be unaffected by classical constructs and trends.
Rudra's works have been extensively published, while Partho, who never sought to publish any of his works, is still known in the circle as the most talented. Despite their opposing beliefs, the two poets grow to be great friends, with Rudra taking Partho under his wing and imparting his vast knowledge and culture onto the young, sassy poet.
As the movie progresses, Partho becomes ill with a terminal illness, and Rudra finds himself reflecting on their friendship, how it began, and its evolution over time. The beautiful writing and storytelling walk us through the flashbacks of their glorious moments of sharing their art, love, and life. We witness some moments of both of them together and separately. It shows us how they differ in their way of writing and style but united through their passion for poetry, words, storytelling, and love for their language and culture.
Partho's illness makes them both realise, that sometimes it's too late to reflect on the beautiful emotions, and it's better to cherish them when the time and opportunity present themselves. Rudra is now shown in a more vulnerable light, as he continues his solitary existence, working on his next book, while lamenting his missed opportunities to confess his deep feelings for his dear friend.
The supporting cast adds an extra layer of meaning to the film, as their stories weave in and out of the main narrative. Arpita Chatterjee and Biswajit Chakroborty portray a married couple, both poets themselves, and find themselves entwined in the lives of Rudra and Partho in unexpected ways. Meanwhile, Indrani Haldar and Ananya Chatterjee portray sisters, each with different struggles and aspirations that show the impact and influence of love, connection and artistic inspirations.
The real-life friendship of the two lead actors, with Soumitra Chatterjee being the mentor to Debshankar Haldar, adds a sense of realism and magic to the movie. Their on-screen chemistry of fine acting skills and natural aura is critical in conveying the emotions of their characters to the audience.
The cinematography of the movie is splendid, with an emphasis on the quiet beauty of the Bengal countryside. The music perfectly blends with the feel of the movie, adding an extra emotional touch to the poetry recitals and the touching scenes between the lead actors.
In conclusion, Saanjhbatir Rupkathara is not just a movie. It's an ode to art, love, emotions, & friendships. A beautiful poetic journey that takes you back to your childhood memories, your love stories, your forgotten friendships, and a feeling that we should not take anything for granted. It's a movie that will leave you feeling heartfelt and leave you with the desire to value your connections more and living your dreams. It's a must-watch for all art, literature and movie lovers.
