It's not long before the group discovers that Rita is actually an alien who's come to Earth to find a powerful crystal that will give her the power to destroy the world. She's been searching for it for millions of years and believes it's buried somewhere in the town of Angel Grove, where the teenagers live. With the help of Alpha 5, a robot assistant left behind by the original Power Rangers, and Zordon, the former Red Ranger who's now a disembodied consciousness, the group realizes that they are the only ones who can stop Rita and save the world.

The rest of the movie plays out like a classic superhero origin story, as the teenagers learn to harness their powers, train in combat, and eventually don their iconic suits and take on Rita and her army of Putties. The action sequences are well choreographed and visually stunning, with special effects that make the Rangers' powers look both realistic and fantastical. The costumes, too, are a modern take on the classic spandex suits from the original show, with each Ranger sporting a sleek, armored look that's both practical and stylish.

One of the movie's strengths is its character development. Each of the teenagers has their own distinct personality and backstory, and the movie takes the time to flesh them out and give them real emotional depth. We see Jason struggle with the pressure of being a leader, Billy deal with a learning disability, Kimberly grapple with her past mistakes, Zack confront his fear of losing his mother, and Trini navigate her identity as a queer Asian-American.
