Karthik (Madhavan) meets with Shanthi (Shalini) in a wedding ceremony and he instantly falls in love. Shanthi is a college student who commutes daily between Tambaram and Nungambakam, during her journey she is being followed by Karthik her suitor. He desperately tries to woo her and he finally succeeds doing so and their daily acquaintance changes into deep attachment and love.

The couple finally decides to get married but unfortunately their parents disagree on a few terms after meeting with each other and finally their social marriage is broken.

Karthik and Shanthi decide to get married secretly in a temple because Shanthi has some family obligations. Shanthi being the youngest sister cannot get married before the marriage of her older sister. But circumstances are tough on Shanthi and she decides to break the tradition. After their secret wedding they fail to hide it from their parents and are driven away from home.

Shanthi and Kathik begin to set up a small home of their own but they fail to maintain the maturity and balance of a married life. Every single day they end up fighting with each other and behave more as friends do than that of a husband and wife.

One day Shanthi meets with a tragic accident and suffers from several serious injuries. On the other hand Karthik desperately searches for his wife and begins to feel the void. Finally, Karthik manages to trace Shanthi who is admitted to a hospital after the severe accident. She is fighting for her life and the situation remains completely tensed, Karthik has very little hope to get back Shanthi in his life. At that very moment he realizes the intense love for Shanthi, her importance in his life and he regains the maturity of a married couple which both them lacked previously. Shanthi wins her battle with death and is happily reunited with Karthik.

Sakhi is a 2007 romance movie with a runtime of 2 hours and 26 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.9.
