Successful lawyer and single mom Jess Gradwell, played by Gail O’Grady has always had a close relationship with her teenage daughter Sara, played by Danielle Panabaker. Jess is just turning 15 however, and is looking to spread her wings. When Sara is finally noticed by the popular boy at school things started to get a little heated between them and Sara and her mom. Sara is struggling with whether to go all the way with her new boyfriend and starts to get distant and irritable with her overprotective mother. In the meantime, Jess meets recently divorced, and oh so sexy, Dr. Alex Lofton played, by Grant Show and becomes involved in a torrid affair. When Jess catches Sara about to have sex with her boyfriend the bond they share starts to become really shaky. While Jess is preaching to Sara that she needs to remain a virgin; she is also heating up the sheets with Dr. Alex. The classic “do as I say not as I do,” quickly comes into play when Jess finds herself single and pregnant. Sara is livid that her mom is pregnant at 38 years old and not married and the sparks fly between the two as they struggle to come to terms with not only Sara’s growing up but the new bundle of joy that will be joining the family in a few months’ time. The movie follows Jess and Sara through the pregnancy as Jess never tells Alex that she is pregnant with his child. Since the affair was just a fling, and Alex left town, Jess decided not to let him in on her little secret. Sara accuses Jess of being everything from immoral to selfish when her mom decides to keep the baby. Sara has nothing to do with her mom during most of the pregnancy and the tension between the two rises as Sara is struggling to assert her independence but still really needs her mom. Sex and the Single Mom is a poignant look at how “do as I say not as I do,” can come back to haunt even the best of mothers.
