Sherlock Holmes in Terror By Night is a 1946 thriller movie that stars Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, and Alan Mowbray. It is one of the many adaptations of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories. The movie starts with Holmes and Dr. Watson boarding a train in London, which is bound for Scotland. They have been hired by a wealthy British merchant, Roland Carstairs, to protect a valuable diamond called the Star of Rhodesia. Carstairs believes that his life is in danger, and that someone will try to steal the diamond.

Holmes and Watson take up their positions on the train, only to find that Carstairs' worst fears have come true. During the night, the diamond is stolen, and Carstairs is found dead in his compartment. The only clue to the thief's identity is a small piece of wax that is found near the diamond's hiding place.

Holmes, being the brilliant detective that he is, is determined to solve the case and recover the diamond. He investigates everyone on the train, including Carstairs' secretary, Vivian Vedder, and the other passengers. Among the suspects are a group of mysterious Indian travellers, a shady antiques dealer, and a beautiful singer, who is travelling with her manager.

As the investigation continues, Holmes and Watson uncover a web of deceit and intrigue. They are helped by a number of interesting characters, including a train conductor and a Scotland Yard detective, who is also on board the train.

The tension in the movie increases as the investigation heats up. There are a number of dramatic scenes, including a thrilling train chase and a nail-biting confrontation between Holmes and the thief. The climactic scene, which takes place on the roof of the train, is particularly exciting.

Throughout the movie, Rathbone and Bruce light up the screen with their chemistry and wit. Rathbone's portrayal of Holmes is masterful, and he is truly one of the best actors to have played the legendary detective. Bruce's Watson is also excellent, providing comic relief and a steady presence in the midst of the chaos.

The supporting cast is also very good. Mowbray, in particular, is a standout as the agitated Secretary Hoxton. The Indian travellers are also well-played, with great attention to detail in their costumes and accents.

The movie is expertly directed by Roy William Neill, who also directed many of the other Sherlock Holmes movies starring Rathbone and Bruce. The pacing is excellent, with just the right amount of suspense and action to keep the audience engaged.

Overall, Sherlock Holmes in Terror By Night is a gripping and exciting movie that will keep you guessing until the very end. It is a must-see for fans of Sherlock Holmes, and a great introduction to the character for those who are new to him. With its classic performances, thrilling plot, and expert direction, it is truly a gem of a movie.
