Based loosely on the life and adventures of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, who plays a fictionalized version of himself called Bill Williamson. The movie charts the career of Williamson after his return from fighting in World War I to becoming one of the top African American performers of the 1930s and 40s. Along the way Williamson finds his career hampered and helped by his romance with Selena Rogers and his best friend. The movie is known for the almost entirely African American cast and the performances of some of the great singers and dancers of the period.
