Summer Lover, also known as Sappho, is about two newlywed Americans who travel to the island of Lesbos for their honeymoon. Set in 1926, the story is a period piece, and the main characters are outfitted in elegant costuming that reflects the wealth of their situation and the extravagance of the time. The indulgent atmosphere of the 1920’s provides a perfect setting for the adventure of the main character, who is the wife in the newlywed couple. Her journey focuses around a sexual exploration with a woman outside of her new marriage. The newlywed wife’s name happens to be Sappho, which was also the name of a Greek poet that coincidentally lived on the island of Lesbos where the couple is vacationing. The movie is said to be inspired by the Sappho’s works, which are poems and other writings remembered most prominently for their exploration of the author’s lesbian feelings and relationships. In Summer Lover, the main character Sappho relates to the feelings of the ancient Greek poet, whom she is connected to by name and locality, when she develops an unrequited love for a striking Russian girl she meets who is also vacationing on the island. But this love is not unrequited for long, and as Sappho the newlywed American begins to share the experiences that Sappho the Greek poet shared on the same island with women centuries before, she becomes more and more curious about this ancient Greek poet and about herself. But it’s not long before Sappho’s journey becomes known to others on the island, and she must confront the criticism of 1920’s society and the harsh moral condemnation she will surely return too once she leaves the island. Robert Crombie directs this modern erotic exploration of desires that bridge societal definitions of who and what love should be. Avalon Barrie stars as Sappho, the newlywed American wife, Todd Soley stars as Phil, the newlywed American husband, and Lyudmila Shiryaeva stars as Helene, the Russian girl.
