Tintin and his dog Snowy are browsing a market where he buys a miniature ship of the Unicorn. However, he is attacked by Ivan Sakharine. When Tintin arrives home, he notices the model is broken, revealing a scroll. Tintin notices his model was stolen and goes to accuse Sakharine, only to see that Sakharine's model is unbroken. Tintin realizes that two models exist and heads home to read the scroll, placing it inside of his wallet, only for Silk to swipe it later.

Later, Tintin is abducted and imprisoned aboard the SS Karaboudjan. Tintin learns that Sakharine led a mutiny and meets the perpetually-drunk Captain Haddock. Haddock, the former captain, helps Tintin and Snowy escape. Sakharine sends a seaplane after the group, but the trio hijacks the plane for Morocco, only to crash in the Sahara.

Haddock hallucinates, recalling that ancestor Sir Francis Haddock captained the Unicorn. Rather than surrender to pirates, Sir Francis sank the treasure-rich vessel. It's revealed that three Unicorn models exist, each with a clue to find the ship. The last model is in Morocco. There, Sakharine manages to not only gain the third scroll but also the one Silk had swiped.
