Steven Spielberg directs this real-life criminal caper starring Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio. By the age 18, Frank Abagnale Jr. (DiCaprio) had conned his way into millions of dollars by posing as a pilot, lawyer and doctor. FBI agent Carl Hanratty Jr. (Tom Hanks) doggedly pursues the case, in spite of his superiors’ lack of interest in investigating bank fraud. Abagnale begins his life in crime by emulating his father, Frank Sr. (Christopher Walken), who commits a series of tax frauds. In 1963, Frank Sr. brings his 16-year old son with him to try and get an illegitimate loan from a bank. When the ruse fails, tensions build between Frank Sr. and his wife, Paula (Nathalie Baye), leading to a divorce. Frank Jr. runs away from home, using checks from his father to bankroll his getaway. He then commits small-time cons for money until he impersonates a Pan Am pilot, in order to forge payroll checks, and charge hotel and fancy restaurant bills to the company. Hanratty almost manages to catch the young criminal at a hotel, but Frank manages to convince him that he is actually a Secret Service agent and makes his escape. A year later, Frank has forged a Harvard medical degree and works at a Georgia hospital. He begins dating Brenda Strong (Amy Adams), nurse, and soon proposes. In order to impress Brenda’s father Roger (Martin Sheen), Frank claims to have a law degree from Berkeley and passes the Louisiana Bar exam. Meanwhile, Agent Hanratty uncovers Frank’s identity and tracks down his location through the wedding announcement and arrives at the engagement party to make the arrest. Frank once again makes a last-minute escape. Eighteen months later, Hanratty persistently traces Frank through his forged checks to France where he finally gets Frank in custody. After extraditing Frank back to the United States, he receives a 12 year sentence for his crimes, but Hanratty begins to visit him in prison to for his expertise on forgery. After four years, Carl arranges for Frank to serve the remainder of his time as a consultant for the FBI, where he helps solve bank fraud cases and remains close friends with Hanratty.
