The Emperor Jones is an American movie that's loosely based on the play of the same name by Eugene O'Neill. The film gives the title character a backstory in which he starts off as a porter on a train, but he is corrupted by big city influences and kills a man. After a stint in prison, he makes his way to a tropical island and eventually becomes its dictator. He proves to be a cruel and corrupt leader and the islanders revolt against him.
