The Legend of Johnny Lingo is a film released in 2003 that is set in Polynesia. The film is a remake of an older film, and it is based on a true story. The film tells the story of an infant boy that is washed up on a South Pacific island in a canoe. He is received as a gift from heaven and the tribal chief adopts him as a future leader. The boy is named Tama.

Over time a series of hardships are blamed on Tama, and he becomes an outcast and is sent to live with the two poorest people living on the island. These characters are Mahana and her father who is a drunk. Mahana is not considered attractive by many people on the island, but Tama finds himself drawn to her. He eventually builds a boat to sail away, but he vows to come back to her. He eventually runs into the trader named Johnny Lingo and after working for him for years he is able to return to Tama and complete the love story.
