Released in 1984, The Toxic Avenger is a "cult classic" from B-movie company Troma Entertainment. The plot centers around a mutated nerd who uses powers gained from being doused in toxic chemicals to take revenge on those that tormented him throughout his life. Though not a traditional super hero movie, The Toxic Avenger does share some similar concepts to those types of films. It is often classified as an "action comedy," though it does also share some traits with horror and sex comedies. The film was written by Lloyd Kaufman and Joe Ritter. Kaufman also directed and produced the film with Michael Herz. He was even in charge of cinematography, though he had help from James London in this duty. Most of the actors that starred in The Toxic Avengers were unknown at the time of making the film. Mitch Cohen, Mark Torgl, and Kenneth Kessler shared duties as the main character, one playing him before his transformation and the other two playing him afterward. While many of the actors from the film stayed in relative obscurity after the release of the movie, at least one actress went on to critical acclaim - Marisa Tomei, who played the role of "locker room girl." Though The Toxic Avenger initially was ignored by most audiences, it became popular later on as a "midnight movie" and eventually gained cult status. It also managed to spawn three current sequels, one proposed sequel, a stage musical, and a children's animated television program. It grossed $800,000 at the box office, which surpassed its $500,000 production budget. It also came to be considered as the film responsible for Troma Entertainment's rise in status as a B-movie production company. They have not managed to produce a "blockbuster" but they have consistently released films over the years that appeal to a niche audience.
