The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is a French musical starring Catherine Deneuve and Nino Castelnuovo. It takes place in the coastal town of Cherbourg, in Normandy, in the late 1950s. The film depicts the romance between Genevieve, who sells umbrellas at a boutique with her mother, and a handsome auto mechanic named Guy. Genevieve and Guy are separated by the Algerian War and the trappings of their own poverty. Genevieve's mother, Madame Emery, struggles to hold on to the failing umbrella boutique. She urges her daughter to marry a wealthy suitor instead. Meanwhile, Guy cares for his sick aunt, Elise, with the help of her shy caregiver, Madeleine. He returns from battle to find the world in Cherbourg has irrevocably changed.

The dialogue in the film is entirely sung, similar to the style of an opera. It was directed by Jacques Demy and costars Anne Vernon as Madame Emery and Marc Michel as Roland, the Parisian jeweler who rivals Guy for Genevieve's affection.
