The Unholy is a 1988 American horror movie about a series of horrific murders of priests in New Orleans churches. The movie was directed by Camilo Vila and was filmed in and around the New Orleans area. Father Michael (Ben Cross) is a Catholic priest who is not convinced that the devil or demons actually exist. Although he believes in evil, he has a hard time believing that it can manifest itself through forces that can actually harm humans. Father Michael is assigned to the St. Agnes Church, which is reopening after the brutal and unsolved murders of a couple of priests two years prior. The diocese, which believes the church is consumed with evil, feels that Father Michael is the perfect person to battle the evil that inhabits the church. Father Michael reluctantly takes on the task. His agenda is for the most part to dispel the myth of a demon inhabiting the church. Unfortunately, soon after his arrival, he finds that the demon Daesiderius may in fact be real. Father Michael's strong will is tested as the demon initially comes to him in the form of a beautiful woman (Nichole Fortier). He manages to resist temptation and doesn't succumb to the will of the demon. Father Michael's faith is tested many more times as the demon returns, only more powerful and determined to consume his soul. The next time the demon returns, it is in its true form of a horrible creature hell bent on destroying the Father. Unlike his predecessors, Father Michael comes to the realization that Daesiderius' power stems from violently killing the sinner while in the act of committing a sin. It then has the power to send the person to hell. Now that he is a true believer, the father is forced to muster every bit of strength and faith to battle the demon.
