Few writers can truly engage suspense, fear, and anxiety they way Stephen King does when he puts the proverbial pen to the page. The reader is forced into a brand new world where things are not always as they seem and there is a new twist around every corner. Thinner was a great example of this unique talent and the plot translates fairly well to the big screen. In an almost prophetic way, the story of a man with a disabling condition is introduced to the audience. As a result of a curse put on him by an elderly woman, he begins to lose weight without explanation. The characters are well developed and slowly the man gains revelation about what is happening and how it is related to past events. He begins to come to terms with his inevitable future and sets out on a journey to either stop the nightmare or attempt to make amends for his mistakes. Several supporting characters are transformed along with the star as reality is increasingly intertwined with fiction, fantasy, illusion, and ultimate the supernatural. As the condition continues to grow, so does Billy Halleck's perception of himself and the world around him.
