- 1 hr 42 min
The 1990 dramatic film To Sleep With Anger was written and directed by African-American filmmaker Charles Burnett. The film stars Danny Glover, best known for his role in the Lethal Weapon movies, as Harry Mention, a drifter. At the beginning of the movie, Harry travels to visit his old friend Gideon, a farmer who has retired and now lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two grown sons. Shortly after Harry's arrival in Gideon's home, Gideon suffers a stroke and Harry determines to stay longer. Soon it is clear that while once Harry was simply a magnetic personality, now he is using that personality to influence various members of the family in a much more sinister fashion, with Gideon no longer around to stop him. He connects very strongly with Gideon's son, known to the family as Babe Brother. The boy is discontent with the life he currently has, and Harry takes advantage of this, encouraging him to pursue a partying lifestyle with plenty of drinking and gambling. As time goes by, Harry begins pushing Babe Brother to leave his family and join him on the road instead, spinning exciting tales of an exotic life of travel. Other members of the family work to save Babe Brother from Harry's influence, particularly Gideon's older son, Junior, but Harry is charismatic and mysterious, and his influence over the young man is strong. Though the rest of the family can see Harry's presence as something dark and sinister, Gideon's rebellious younger son is eager to find another life for himself that will give him some of the excitement he craves and finds in Harry's stories. The movie portrays the struggle between the dark appeal of Harry's lifestyle and the values of Gideon's family. The supporting cast included Paul Butler as Gideon, Richard Brooks as Babe Brother, Carl Lumbly as Junior, Mary Alice as Gideon's wife Suzie and Sheryl Lee Ralph as Babe Brother's wife Linda.
