Written and directed by Jeb Stuart of Die Hard fame, this 1997 film takes place in Amarillo, Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. It stars Randy Quaid and Danny Glover. A young boy is kidnapped after his babysitter is murdered. After that, a double murder occurs when a man and a cleaning lady are killed in a motel. Amarillo's long incumbent sheriff Buck Olmstead is running for re-election against ambitious opponent, Jack McGinnis. Each wants the edge of solving the crimes before the election. Frank LaCrosse is an FBI agent who comes to Amarillo and informs Olmstead that he's been assigned to the double murders. The kidnapped child is actually his son. Olmstead discovers LaCrosse's conflict of interest in the case, but LaCrosse believes that the kidnapping and murders are connected. Olmstead apprehensively permits LaCrosse to participate in the investigations, knowing he might lose his job.
