Dreamscape is a movie about a young man named Alex Gardner, played by Dennis Quaid, who exhibits incredible psychic powers such as ESP and telekinesis. He was studied in an experiment as a young man by Dr. Paul Novotny, played by Max von Sydow, until Alex grew tired of being poked and prodded and simply quit the experiment and disappeared without a trace. Alex, who makes a living as a professional gambler working the horse races and picking winners using his gifts, is approached and kidnapped by two men who take him back to the institute where Dr. Novotny is now conducting psychic dream-linking research funded by the government and coordinated by a powerful man named Bob Blair. Alex does not willingly participant in the research but winds up being blackmailed into joining the study, along with another psychic named Tommy Ray Glatman, a documented psychopath, implanted in the program as a potential dream assassin by Bob Blair. Alex finds himself falling into a relationship with Novotny's assistant, a beautiful scientist named Jane DeVries, played by Kate Capshaw. Jane refuses to become romantically involved with Alex, as she feels it might interfere with the research progress she has made. Alex is approached by a bestselling author named Charlie Prince who tells him that Blair is a dangerous man and is plotting to kill the President of the United States by having Tommy Ray Glatman infiltrate his nightmares. Both Dr. Novotny and Charlie Prince are murdered because they know too much. Alex has to link with the President's dream to stop Tommy Ray, who has taken the form of a monster, part snake and part human, in an attempt to murder him in his sleep. Alex distracts Tommy while the President stabs him and wakes up safe. Alex, who is worried that Blair will come after both him and Jane, enters Bob Blair's dreams and murders him first.
