Return to Paradise
- 1 hr 51 min
John 'Sheriff' Volgecherev (Vince Vaughn), Lewis McBride (Joaquin Phoenix) and Tony Croft (David Conrad) all travel to Malaysia to have the time of their lives. The plan is to stay as long as their money will last and then return to their lives in the United States, and for the most part everything is working out just the way they want it to. They indulge in all the things that young men are known to at their age: alcohol, women and, of course, hashish. When it is time to return to civilization as they know it, McBride decides that he is going to stay behind and do his part to save the monkeys. Two years later, life has returned to normal for John and Tony in the United States. John is driving exec types around in a limo, while Tony is in the construction business. John has a female ask specifically for him to pick her up; however, things do not end up the way he thinks they will. She claims that her name is Eastern, and she proceeds with a tale about Lewis that catches his attention. As it turns out, McBride has been arrested and thrown in jail for having over 100 grams of hash at his home. The law in Malaysia states that anyone caught with over 100 grams of hash is considered to be a trafficker, and the penalty is death. The only way to avoid the consequences is if both John and Tony return to Malaysia and accept part of the blame for the drugs. Tony is willing to do his part, but John is reluctant to give up three years of his life, and even more so given that he would be spending that time in a third-world penal system. Directed by Joseph Ruben, this drama has supporting roles by Jada Pinkett Smith as M.J. Major, Vera Farmiga as Kerrie, and Nick Sandow as Ravitch.
