Vampyres is a cult horror movie from 1974 that tells the story of two female vampires who seduce and prey on unsuspecting drivers on an isolated country road. The film has a very eerie and atmospheric note that remains consistent throughout the runtime. The overall tone of the movie is dark and brooding, setting the perfect stage for horror, fear, and eroticism. The film is hardly scary and contains more eroticism than terror.

The story is set in an isolated country mansion, where our two protagonists, Fran (Marianne Morris) and Miriam (Anulka Dziubinska), live in a state of sensual fascination. These two women are beautiful and seemingly eternal beings, who, after seducing and feeding on young men in their vicinity, retreat to their mansion to indulge in each other's company.

One night, our hero, John (Murray Brown), meets the female vampires while travelling through the countryside. The women take an instant liking to him and invite him to stay with them at their mansion. John soon discovers the dark secret of the women and the mansion, and the rules that he must adhere to in order to stay alive.

The film is a slow-burning, ever-evolving horror-erotic tale that takes its time to explore the characters' motives and desires. A considerable part of the movie's fascination comes from the sexual tension and the exploration of the beautiful relationships between the female protagonists. Along with these are the exotic and erotic beautiful bodies of the actresses that are pure eye candy for the viewers.

Although Vampyres is a horror movie about vampires, violence and gore are mild, and the emphasis is put on the eroticism and beautiful visual compositions. The movie's unbridled decadence and deliriously over-the-top strangeness have become a big part of its cult status. The film scores high in terms of its cinematic arts and visual aesthetics.

The acting in the movie is incredibly archetypal: Marianne Morris and Anulka Dziubinska are both beautiful women with timeless looks, sultry eyes, and a lust that radiates from the screen. Murray Brown is the group's catalyst, an actor with a stiff and wooden performance, looking the part of a leading man without having the charisma to carry the movie.

As a low-budget movie, Vampyres is an excellent piece of filmmaking that utilizes its visual elements to bring out the atmosphere and the characters' essences. The movie director, Jose Larraz, understood very well the impact and importance of similitude in horror movies. As such, the use of dark and moody tones, long takes, and steady camera work bring out the creepiest parts of the story. A testament to its staying power, Vampyres inspired others to explore the sexual-demonic genre of Gothic horror.

Vampyres is perhaps not the most terrifying horror movie ever made, nor does it have the most profound or exciting story. However, it is an exciting, bizarre, and challenging experience that will leave a lasting impression on the viewer. The atmospheric setting, stunning visuals, and the sublime chemistry between the leading ladies make it an unforgettable piece of horror-erotic cinema. This movie paved the way for the introduction of really unique themes in contemporary cinema, especially in the horror genre.

Vampyres is a 1975 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 27 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.1.
