Where the Bears Are 4 is a 2014 American comedy mystery-thriller web series, created by Joe Dietl, Ben Zook, and Rick Copp. It's the fourth instalment of the same-titled series. The plot picks up from the end of season 3. Reginald "Raspberry" Johnson (played by Joe Dietl), a former Bollywood action movie star, is still missing, and his friends continue their search for him. Nelson (played by Ben Zook), Wood (played by Ian Parks), and Todd (played by Rick Copp) have been working as detectives on this case, but so far, their efforts have been in vain. Even the local police department has given up on finding Raspberry. He's been gone for almost a year without a trace.
The movie begins with the three friends finding a clue, which leads them to Georgia, USA - the birthplace of Raspberry. They start their investigation from there, going undercover as potential buyers for a mysterious collector's beautiful hand-crafted chairs. By doing so, they hope to get closer to Raspberry's disappearance.
The trio finds themselves in a local gay community, surrounded by eccentric and unique characters, including one serial killer on the loose. They have to deal with people that imitate Elvis, horny bears, and a woman who goes by the name of Scarlett O'Hara. Meanwhile, they run into Nelson's ex-boyfriend, who's also on the hunt for Raspberry.
Throughout the movie, the trio leads the audience on a wild goose chase, as they try to uncover Raspberry's whereabouts. Along the way, they find themselves in hilarious and absurd situations, as is not unlike the previous installments of this series. They deal with comical misunderstandings, get caught in over-the-top action sequences and learn about themselves while trying to save Raspberry.
In terms of characters, the four primary actors stick to their usual personalities - Nelson is the sort-of-leader, Wood is neurotic, Todd is slightly off-hinged, and Joe's Raspberry is a charismatic, larger-than-life showman. The movie features a mix of returning and new characters. The returning cast was expected, but the addition of new characters, including the love interest of one of the primary actors, brought in fresh blood.
The movie was filmed in and around Atlanta, Georgia, with some of the shooting taking place on the backlot of Tyler Perry's studios. The setting of the small town in Georgia provides a unique character to the movie, and the production design successfully captures that typical southern look.
The humour from the previous episodes of the series has remained intact, with just as many innuendos, witty one-liners and situational comedy. The mystery element of the story is better than in previous instalments. The script writers have crafted a complex but not too complicated storyline with enough twists and turns to keep the audience engaged.
The movie maintains the high production values found in the previous three seasons. It's clear the cast and crew have been able to improve on some inexperience in previous installments. The action sequences, special effects and set-pieces are well executed, and the movie looks fantastic.
Where The Bears Are 4 isn't going to win any Oscars, but it's not meant to. It's a fun and enjoyable movie that's sure to please anyone who is a fan of the series. It's arguably the best instalment in the Where The Bears Are saga, with a more tangled mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the end. At times, it feels like a Disney movie with a dash of adult humour thrown in, but the humour is intelligent and well-delivered.
Overall, Where The Bears Are 4 is a well-executed comedy mystery-thriller web series that's sure to become a fan favourite. It's an enjoyable movie with an engaging mystery, a great cast and the same witty humour seen in the previous instalments.
Where The Bears Are 4 is a 2015 comedy with a runtime of 2 hours and 36 minutes.
