The movie begins with Nick Twisp being shown as a loner/loser type who lives with his mom. His parents are divorced, and he hates his mom's boyfriend, Jerry. Jerry owes money, and he decides to take Nick and his mom to a trailer park to hide out for the summer. Nick does not approve of the decision, but that changes when he meets a girl. Her name is Sheeni, and they soon become a couple. Nick cares for her so much that he buys her a dog that ends up misbehaving, and getting banned from her house by her parents.

Jerry's ordeal is sorted out, and they leave the trailer park to return home. This causes Sheeni to try to get Nick's real dad a job around her so that Nick can come back there. Nick also has to find a way to get his mom and Jerry to kick him out of the house. Nick does not feel he has it within himself to be rebellious, so he creates an alter-ego named Francois.

By any means necessary, Nick was able to get back to Sheeni. However, by that time Sheeni's parents have shipped her off to boarding school. Now, Nick and Francois must work to get Sheeni kicked out of boarding school so they can finally be together again.
