  • October 28, 2018

The Rite of Spring (2) is the fourth episode of the second season of the popular animated show Bordertown. It picks up where the previous episode left off as Bud Buckwald, the lead character of the show, struggles to adapt to the changes happening in his town. Bud is a Border Patrol agent who resides in a small American town that is experiencing a demographic shift. The town, which was previously predominantly white, is now becoming more diverse, with an influx of Latin American immigrants.

In this episode, Bud has to deal with the arrival of a new neighbor who is a Mexican migrant farmer named Ernesto Gonzales. Bud is suspicious of him because of his ethnicity and is convinced that he is an illegal immigrant. He tries to find evidence to prove his theory and enlists the help of his neighbor Sanford Buckwald. On the other hand, Bud's wife Janice tries to befriend Ernesto and his family, hoping that they could all live together in harmony.

As the story unfolds, the Buckwald family attends a town meeting where Ernesto is looking for help to fight against an unfair practice by the local farmer's association. As Bud's loyalty to the association is greater than his friendship with Ernesto, he turns against him, sparking a heated exchange.

Meanwhile, J.C., Bud's half-Mexican daughter, is dealing with her own issues at school. She is trying to learn the traditional Mexican dance style known as danza, but her teacher, Ms. Wakefield, is less than supportive. Ms. Wakefield believes that J.C.'s passion for danza is misplaced and that she should focus on assimilating to American culture. However, J.C. wants to connect with her roots and decides to take matters into her own hands.

The episode examines the theme of cultural identity and the difficulties that individuals face when trying to reconcile their heritage with the expectations of society. It also highlights the challenges communities face when transforming rapidly, and how it affects both the newcomers and the long-term residents.

Overall, The Rite of Spring (2) is an entertaining and insightful episode that strikes a perfect balance between humor and serious social commentary. It is proof that Bordertown is a show that is not afraid to tackle complex issues head-on while still remaining true to its satirical roots.
