The crime drama Chicago PD follows the travails of fictional law enforcement officers in Chicago. The series heads out onto the street with regular beat cops. It also checks in with the elite unit that handles the big crimes. The series is part of the stable of Chicago-based series from producer Dick Wolf. The series is set in a fictional police district in Chicago. The district is home to both ordinary patrol officer and a special Intelligence Unit. Early seasons of the series followed the adventures of both patrol officers and agents of the Intelligence Unit, which is led by Detective Sergeant Hank Voight. From season four on, the series primarily followed the exploits of the Intelligence Unit. But the Unit expanded to include Detective Kevin Atwater and Officer Kim Burgess. The series is a direct spin off of the Chicago Fire series. Both series are part of the "Chicago" franchise that is produced by Dick Wolf, who also produces the Law and Order franchise. The Chicago franchise also include Chicago Med and Chicago Justice. Chicago Justice was a direct spin off of Chicago P.D. That series, which focused on the legal system, aired for only a single season in 2017. Chicago P.D. debuted on NBC in 2014 and a mid-season replacement series. It was met with mixed reviews from critics. The seventh season of the series premiered in the fall of 2019. In early 2020, NBC announced that it had renewed the series through its tenth season.
