- 4 Seasons
In this prequel series to The Big Bang Theory, we get a look at the early life of Sheldon Cooper, the genius who will grow up to live in an apartment with a few other geniuses. Here, though, he has to learn how to cope with being the smartest kid in the neighborhood. The series begins when Sheldon is nine years old. He's by far smarter than other kids his age, and he's already in high school. That makes him very different from everyone else around him in Texas. It also makes him different from everyone in his own family. The unusual interactions between Sheldon and his family and friends are the basis of the series' humor. That's what ties it to the parent series, The Big Bang Theory. Young Sheldon is set in the 1980s and 90s. The time setting is mostly unimportant, but the writers do occasionally take the opportunity to slip in retro cultural references. The series debuted on CBS in 2017. It originally aired immediately after The Big Bang Theory until that series ended in 2019. Young Sheldon has received generally positive reviews from both critics and audiences. Ratings have been smaller than those of the parent series, but the spin off is still considered successful. It was renewed for a third and fourth season in 2019. The first three seasons of the series began airing in reruns on Nick at Nite in 2020. On-demand streaming of the first three seasons also became available on HBO Max in 2020.
