In Bringing Up Bates season 5 episode 6, titled "I 'Donut' Know What I'd Do Without You!", the Bates family continues on with their busy and hectic lives in East Tennessee. The episode starts off with Kelly Jo and Gil Bates, the parents of the 19 Bates children, running errands and picking up some donuts for breakfast. They talk about how they need to spend more time focusing on themselves and their relationship, as they have been busy with their children and building their family.
Meanwhile, the older Bates children are busy with their own lives and obligations. Zach and Whitney Bates, who are expecting their third child, are in full nesting mode and are trying to prepare their home for the new addition to their family. They take a trip to Ikea to purchase some furniture and accessories for the baby's room, but experience a bit of a hiccup when they realize they may have been a bit too ambitious with their shopping list.
In addition, Alyssa Bates Webster is preparing for a big event - her son's first birthday party! She enlists the help of her sister-in-law, Erin Bates Paine, to help with the party planning and preparation. With a donut-themed party in mind, the two sisters-in-law get to work making decorations, setting up the party space, and of course, making lots and lots of donuts!
The episode also shows the younger Bates children, who are homeschooled and have a variety of different interests. Josie Bates Balka, who is 16 at the time of filming, is shown practicing driving with her mother, Kelly Jo. As she gets more comfortable behind the wheel, Kelly Jo talks to her about the responsibilities and privileges that come with driving.
Katie Bates, who is an aspiring singer, has a few performances lined up and is working on perfecting her craft. She meets with her vocal coach, who helps her prepare for an upcoming concert. The episode shows Katie practicing and working hard to improve her singing skills.
Throughout the episode, the Bates family's love, support, and sense of community is evident. They work together to support each other in their individual pursuits, and come together to celebrate milestones and special moments. With laughter, love, and of course, lots of donuts, the Bates family continues to show what it means to have a tight-knit and supportive family.
