Ep 3. Hypospadias

Dave season 1 episode 3 titled Hypospadias revolves around Dave's insecurities about his masculinity. The episode starts with Dave and his girlfriend Ally after a late-night comedy gig. Ally starts talking about marriage, children, and family as she holds Dave's hand. On the other hand, Dave tries to change subjects and reflects on his life with a sudden fear that he forgot to turn off a new lamp he bought.

The next day, Dave meets Emma, his childhood friend, and a sex educator. Emma reassures Dave that forgetting things is just a symptom of anxiety. Dave opens up to her about a condition he was born with called hypospadias, which causes urethral misplacement. After sharing his great concern over how this would affect his masculinity, Emma suggests Dave take action to lift his spirits. Emma also suggests Dave attending a circumcision party for his friend Mike.

Later on, Dave leaves his home to attend Mike's party. As he enters the room, Dave is instantly uncomfortable as he sees all Mike's other friends making jokes about their own circumcision experience. He even goes head to head with Mike's co-worker who shares a story about his circumcised state.

Dave feels inferior to the other guys, leading him to take some drugs to enhance his performance. Dave finds himself in a conversation with two dancers, and after they ignore him and take part in a different conversation with Mike's friends, he starts to spiral. He imagines receiving praise from the duo, leading Dave to feel sexually gratified. After Mike interrupts, Dave exits the party and runs into Emma. Dave talks about how he had disappointed himself and discusses his relationship with Ally.

Dave returns home to find his girlfriend struggling with a bug infestation within their apartment. They argue, as Ally mistakes this as a refusal to start a family with her, leading Dave to shout, revealing his hypospadias condition. The episode ends with the couple kissing while reconciling their relationship.

The episode showcases the importance of understanding oneself and making peace with the problems within oneself. Dave's insecurities regarding his masculinity cause him to suffer throughout the episode. However, his vulnerability in front of Emma and Ally leads to his growth, and he emerges with a better understanding of himself. The episode imparts an essential message to people who may be struggling with similar insecurities that it's okay to accept the flaws and imperfections as a part of oneself and move on.
