Drunk History UK is a hilarious and educational show that combines history and humor with one very unique twist - the narrators are all drunk. Each episode features a different comedian who shares a drunken retelling of a historical event, while actors reenact the scenes as they’re described. It’s a show that’s half history lesson, half comedy routine, and always a good time.
In season 2 episode 9, comedians Sara Pascoe and Nick Helm join forces to tell the stories of some famous historical rebels. Sara kicks things off with the tale of Emmeline Pankhurst and the suffragettes. Pankhurst was a British political activist who fought for women's right to vote in the early 20th century. Sara takes us through the struggles and triumphs of the suffragette movement, detailing their militant tactics and their eventual success in securing the right to vote. Along the way, we get plenty of laughs as Sara's drunken ramblings veer off into tangential asides and hilarious commentary.
Next up, Nick Helm takes the stage to tell the story of Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot. Fawkes was famously involved in a failed attempt to blow up the British Parliament in 1605, a plot that has since been commemorated annually in the UK with the holiday of Bonfire Night. Nick regales us with tales of Fawkes' daring escape from the Tower of London, and the twisted web of conspirators who hoped to overthrow the government. As always, Nick's drunken storytelling is peppered with hilarious jokes and observations, keeping the mood light even as he recounts a potentially dark chapter in British history.
The third and final story of the episode comes from Sara Pascoe, who shares the tale of Queen Boudica, a warrior queen who famously led a rebellion against the Roman Empire in the 1st century AD. Sara paints a vivid picture of Boudica's life and times, from her battles against the Romans to her tragic end. Along the way, we get plenty of comedic insights into Boudica's mindset and the motivations driving her rebellion.
As with all episodes of Drunk History UK, the stories in season 2 episode 9 are given a unique spin by the inebriated narrators. But despite the boozy tone, the show takes its history seriously, presenting accurate information alongside the laughs. It's a perfect blend of entertainment and education, and with comedians as talented as Sara Pascoe and Nick Helm on board, it's sure to be a wild ride.
