Escape to the Country is back for its twenty-second season, and in episode 37, we follow Jules Hudson as he travels to the picturesque county of Kent, known for its rolling hills, historic towns, and abundant coastline. While the county is only an hour away from London, the pace of life in Kent is far more relaxed than in the city. The episode promises idyllic views of verdant countryside, charming cottages, and idiosyncratic properties.
In this episode, Jules meets two sets of house-hunters, each with their own unique requirements for their dream home. The first couple, Mark and Georgina, are looking for a new home which can accommodate their desire for space, quiet, and rural life. They have previously lived in London but now want to relocate outside the city to raise their family. Georgina is also an avid gardener, so a home with a large enough garden is essential for her.
Jules takes them to see three properties in Kent, each with its own distinctive style and location. The first property is a stunning period house in the village of Wrotham, known for its rich history and beautiful architecture. The couple is impressed by the spaciousness of the house, the large garden and the stunning views of the nearby fields. The second home is a converted oast house, a traditional building used for drying hops, that has been converted into a beautiful, modern family home. Mark and Georgina love the open-plan living space, with its vaulted ceiling and tranquil views of the nearby orchard. The third property they visit is a customized modern home on a golf course near Faversham. It has a minimalistic design and is perfect for Mark and Georgina since it's mainly a one-storey home. Though not initially blown away by it, the property aces the test drive as it stands out to them.
The second couple is Janet and Ian, seeking to retire to the area after living in London for most of their lives. They both have a passion for wine and have decided to follow their dream by starting a vineyard. The couple wants a house with a large plot of land that can accommodate their viticultural aspirations and provide additional income streams from potential cottage rentals. Jules takes them to three properties that fit the bill. The first property is a charming cottage in Littlebourne that has been trading for a B&B on and off for the past 10 years as it has 3 separate annexes. With plenty of space and potential for expansion, this property appeals to Janet and Ian. However, the second property, a farmhouse in Chartham without acres of land isn't what they had pictured. The third property, a stunning Tudor farmhouse in Canterbury, complete with swimming pool, hot tub, and annexes, is exactly what they were looking for. Although they are afraid that it may be slightly above their initial budget, they can picture themselves living in this magnificent property.
Throughout the episode, Jules provides an insight into the unique history and culture of Kent, highlighting its rich heritage and outstanding scenic locations. He showcases many local highlights, from the natural beauty of the White Cliffs of Dover to the vibrant cultural attractions of Canterbury. Jules also introduces you to several local residents who share their love of the area and explain what makes it such a special place to call home.
