Follow the Money is a Danish crime thriller that depicts the intricate web of financial and corporate corruption in the contemporary world. The show's narrative focuses on the efforts of the Danish police and financial crime agencies to crack down on financial misconduct, and the challenges they face while trying to unravel the complicated money trail.
In episode 2 of its first season, the story takes a deep dive into the financial dealings of the prominent Danish energy company, Energreen, which has allegedly been evading taxes and siphoning off government subsidies. The episode starts with a glimpse of Birgitte Nyborg, Denmark's prime minister, ordering the head of Energy Minister to investigate the irregularities in Energreen's financial records.
Meanwhile, we are introduced to Mads Justesen, an idealistic detective, who is continuing his investigations into the murder of a young woman at a wind turbine site owned by Energreen. He has received an anonymous tip that the victim used to work for the energy company, which raises suspicions about Energreen's complicity in the crime.
Mads teams up with his colleague, Alf Rybjerg, to interview the victim's former colleagues and gather evidence against the suspects. They visit Energreen's head office, where they meet with Sander, the company's suave and ambitious CEO, who brushes off their questions and accuses the detectives of conducting a witch hunt. However, Mads and Alf are not deterred and manage to extract some useful information from the company's financial records.
Meanwhile, we see our anti-hero, Nicky, who is still trying to establish his own business, using the funds he obtained from his illegal dealings with Energreen. He meets with his partner, Bimse, who informs him about the threatening phone calls he has received from some unidentified persons. Bimse suspects that Nicky's recent criminal activities might have attracted unwanted attention and asks him to be cautious.
On the other hand, Claudia, Energreen's ambitious financial advisor, is pressurizing Sander to move forward with their ambitious offshore wind farm project, despite the mounting legal complications. Sander is torn between his desire for profit and his conscience, as he knows that the project is not economically viable and will cause irreparable damage to the environment.
Towards the end of the episode, we see Mads and Alf stumbling upon a major breakthrough in the murder case, which implicates several Energreen employees in the crime. However, they also discover that their superiors have been withholding important information from them, which indicates a larger conspiracy to cover up Energreen's illicit activities.
The second episode of Follow the Money meticulously sets up the over-arching narrative of the show, by providing glimpses of the complex interplay between corporate greed, political corruption, and individual ambition. It showcases the show's nuanced writing and sleek cinematography, while building up the tension towards the pivotal moments in the story. The performances of the cast are commendable, particularly Nikolaj Lie Kaas as Mads and Thomas Bo Larsen as Alf, who bring depth and resonance to their characters. Overall, the episode is a riveting journey into the dark underbelly of modern capitalism, which keeps the viewers on the edge of their seats.
