Happy Jail Season 1 Episode 2 Everybody Needs a Second Chance

  •   (12)

In episode 2 of Happy Jail's first season titled "Everybody Needs a Second Chance," viewers are taken deeper inside the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) with Jonathan "Tans" Tan, the founder of the famous dance program that brought worldwide attention to the Philippine prison system.

At the start of the episode, Tans is greeted by the arrival of the first foreign inmate in CPDRC's history, Keith, a drug mule from Tanzania who smuggled over one million dollars' worth of cocaine into the country. As Keith is escorted to his new cell, Tans is struck by a sudden sense of purpose in rehabilitating the new inmate. He sees this as an opportunity to prove that even those who have committed severe crimes can still have a second chance at redemption.

To break the ice with Keith, Tans decides to "beatbox" to him, showcasing his musical prowess by producing percussion-like sounds with only his voice. Keith and the other prisoners are immediately taken by Tans’ performance, and a dance-off ensues. Tans further expresses to Keith that everyone deserves a second chance in life, and that he himself was given that chance by the Philippines when he avoided jail time for stealing millions of pesos from the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Meanwhile, Army, one of the most talented dancers in the CPDRC, is held in solitary confinement for two weeks for smoking marijuana. Tans is disappointed in Army, as he sees potential in the young man, but he doesn't give up on him yet. Army takes his punishment seriously and use his time there to ponder over his wrongs. When he is finally allowed to return to the general population, he finds himself isolated from the group and resents Tans for keeping him away.

Krumping dancer "Bayan" takes the stage in this episode, impressing Tans with his raw talent and life story. Bayan confesses to Tans that, while he was a drug dealer, he only did so to provide for his family, who was struggling to make ends meet. He became addicted to Meth during this time and was arrested during a buy-bust operation. After his stint in prison, Bayan turned to dancing and hopes to share his story and his dancing with the world.

As the episode comes to a close, Tans is tasked with choreographing a new dance routine but faces some pushback from his dancers. They feel his approach is too strict, and they want to try new styles and create their routines. Not wanting to stifle their creativity, Tans realizes that he must change his ways too and find a new balance where everyone has a chance to contribute their unique talents.

"Everybody Needs a Second Chance" humanizes CPDRC inmates by showing they are not just criminals but people with vulnerabilities, dreams, and stories worth sharing. The episode also showcases the transformative power of music and dance, not only in rehabilitating inmates but also in bridging cultural gaps, uplifting people, and giving them hope.
