Japanese drama Kimi wa Pet, or You're My Pet, revolves around a successful career woman named Sumire Iwaya who decides to adopt a young man as her pet after a series of failed relationships and personal setbacks. In season 1 episode 16, titled "The Rainy Day Promise," viewers are taken on a journey through the past as Sumire reflects on her childhood and a promise she made with her childhood friend, Ayumi.
As the episode opens, Sumire is seen staring out of a window at the pouring rain, reminiscing about a promise she made with Ayumi when they were just kids. The two had promised that they would become famous (Sumire as a writer, Ayumi as an actress) and build a house together in the woods. However, life had taken them on different paths and Sumire is wracked with guilt for not keeping her promise.
Meanwhile, her relationship with her pet Momo is becoming increasingly complicated. She finds herself developing feelings for him, but is conflicted about the taboo nature of their relationship. Momo, on the other hand, continues to be the ever-doting pet, always eager to please Sumire and make her happy.
As the rain continues to fall outside, Sumire receives a surprise visit from Ayumi. The two haven't seen each other in years and it's a bittersweet reunion. Ayumi is now a successful actress, as she had always dreamed of, and has come to Tokyo to film a movie. She shares with Sumire how she had always wanted to visit the city with her, but never got the chance. This prompts Sumire to take a day off from work and take Ayumi on a tour of the city, showing her all the places they had dreamed of visiting as kids.
Throughout the day, Sumire is forced to confront her own feelings of inadequacy and expressed jealousy towards Ayumi's success. She had always felt like the underdog, and seeing Ayumi achieve her dreams just exacerbates those feelings. However, Ayumi reminds Sumire of the promise they had made and encourages her to keep working towards her goals.
As the day comes to an end, Ayumi has to head back to the set. Before saying goodbye, she gives Sumire a piece of paper with her phone number on it, and encourages her to call if she ever needs someone to talk to. Sumire realizes that she's been carrying the weight of her childhood promise for far too long, and decides to let it go. She tears up the paper with Ayumi's number, symbolically closing that chapter of her life and moving forward.
Back at home, Sumire finds Momo waiting for her eagerly, as always. However, instead of being greeted with the usual display of affection, Sumire takes a step back and reassesses their relationship. She realizes that she's been using Momo as a crutch, someone to lean on while she worked through her own personal issues. With a heavy heart, she makes the difficult decision to let Momo go, recognizing that it's not fair to either of them to continue their relationship.
Overall, "The Rainy Day Promise" is a poignant episode that delves deep into Sumire's past and her struggles with self-doubt. It's a reminder that sometimes we need to let go of the things holding us back so that we can move forward and achieve our dreams.
