Ep 5. The Other Man

Dev and Rachel are strolling home from a concert when he takes of his jacket to find a rip in it. She urges him to just throw it away, but he insists on having it repaired. The two start talking about what it means to be in a committed relationship versus dating, and Rachel admits that she had a crush on a mutual friend, Mark, before she and Dev started dating. Dev initially brushes it off, but as they continue to talk, he becomes more curious about what might have happened if things had gone differently.

Over the next few days, Dev becomes increasingly jealous and obsessed with the idea of Rachel and Mark together. He starts snooping on Rachel's phone when she's not looking and trying to poke holes in their relationship. Rachel picks up on his strange behavior and confronts him, but Dev insists that nothing is wrong and refuses to talk about it.

Finally, at a dinner party, Dev's jealousy boils over. He starts interrogating Mark about his intentions with Rachel and insinuating that he's not a trustworthy person. Rachel is embarrassed and upset, and Dev realizes how crazy he's been behaving. He apologizes to Rachel and they both agree that they're committed to each other and their relationship is strong enough to withstand any temporary crushes.

Meanwhile, Denise and Arnold are also at the dinner party and dealing with their own relationship issues. Denise is annoyed that Arnold hasn't introduced her to his parents yet, and Arnold confesses that he's been nervous because they're conservative and might not approve of Denise being a lesbian. Denise tells him that he needs to stop worrying about what other people think and just be himself.

The episode ends with Dev and Rachel happily back together, but Dev realizes that jealousy and insecurity are normal parts of any relationship. He promises to be more open and honest with Rachel in the future.
