The episode "Episode 3" of the first season of MotherFatherSon follows the aftermath of the explosive events of the previous episode. Max Finch, the Jewish-American media mogul and owner of the news empire The National Reporter, is now in a critical condition after a car accident that happened at the end of the last episode. As the episode begins, his son, Caden, is in a state of shock after hearing the news that his father is in a medically induced coma. He struggles with unresolved feelings towards his father, whom he blames for his traumatic childhood and addiction struggles.
Kathryn, Caden's mother and Max's ex-wife, is also in a state of distress. She is distraught by the news of her former husband's condition and is staying at the hospital. Kathryn, who has now become a successful politician, is torn between her public duties and her maternal instincts towards her son and ex-husband. Meanwhile, the staff at The National Reporter are scrambling to fill the void left by Max's absence. Maggie, one of Max's trusted employees and Caden's ex-girlfriend, steps up and starts to take charge. However, as she tries to keep the newspaper running, she faces resistance from some of her colleagues who feel she is too inexperienced and unqualified for the job.
As Caden processes his emotions, he decides to visit his father in the hospital. However, he is greeted with a cold welcome from his father's business associates who are guarding Max. Caden tries to connect with them, but they are unyielding, and their hostility towards him only strengthens Caden's resentment towards his father and his father's business empire. Caden's emotions spiral out of control, leading him to relapse and becoming an easy target for manipulative drug dealers.
The episode also introduces a subplot involving a young girl named Elsie, who has now become a critical part of the story. She is a patient in the same hospital where Max is receiving care and is being treated for cancer. Despite her young age, she is very aware of her mortality and finds solace in the stories that her mother tells her. However, as her body continues to deteriorate, she becomes increasingly isolated, and her mother finds it difficult to bear the weight of her daughter's illness alone.
Overall, Episode 3 sets the stage for the remainder of the season, highlighting the challenges that each character is facing in their lives. From Caden's struggle with addiction to Kathryn's political career, everything is interconnected, and their lives are interwoven in ways they could have never imagined. The episode is a masterclass in storytelling, highlighting the complexity of human emotions and the bond that exists between family members.
