Ray Shoesmith is back with his moral ambiguity and cold-blooded, yet charming demeanor in the sixth episode of Mr Inbetween season 2, titled Let Me Stop You There. The episode begins with Ray doing his best to mold his daughter Britt into a responsible adult, even if he has to go to extreme measures to do so. However, this fatherly activity is disrupted by two different clients who demand his attention.

First, Ray’s boss, Freddy, informs him of a job that involves a little bit of extra motivation to convince the debtor to pay up. Freddy’s hands-off approach corresponds to his inability to handle conflict properly, so he relies on Ray to do the dirty work. Ray then meets with the debtor who seems to be unthreatened by him. But Ray has a way of instilling fear without a single word, and his manipulation is chilling to watch.

The second client is a man who is told by his boss to ensure that Ray’s associate, Gary, will not testify in court against him. Ray knows Gary is susceptible to money temptation, and advises his client accordingly. The cash-for-testimony technique seems to be working brilliantly, until Gary’s conscience kicks in. His unexpected decision, and his clumsy attempt to report the transaction to Ray, put the client’s fate in danger.

As Ray tries to salvage the situation, he is forced to resort to a past betrayal to get Gary back in line. It was a surprising move, but one that proved successful. Amidst all the chaos, Ray’s romantic life takes a turn with a reveal that won’t be divulged here, but it’s good to see he still has time for love.

The episode climaxes with a brawl that reminds us that Ray doesn’t just use his intellect to solve problems. He’s just as adept with his fists, as he is with words. The scene is brutal and intense, and it would be tough to not feel exhilarated with the way Ray navigates to the end of his predicament.

Let Me Stop You There is one of the strongest episodes of Mr Inbetween’s second season so far. Ray’s character development is a combination of his past and present, and we see how he’s becoming more complicated as the show progresses. He’s becoming more humane, yet he’s still Ray Shoesmith, the hitman who blurts out inappropriate comments with ease and doesn’t flinch when it’s time to take revenge.

The show’s writing is top-notch, with witty and suspenseful dialogue that keeps the viewers on their toes. The pacing is perfect, alternating between violence, humor, and drama in appropriate doses. The direction is equally impressive, with a perfect blend of angles, camera movements, and music that heighten the tension in each scene. The acting is also noteworthy, with Scott Ryan’s portrayal of Ray Shoesmith being the standout amongst the cast. He has an innate ability to make the audience root for him, even when he’s doing morally questionable things.

In conclusion, if you’re looking for a show that combines grit, wit, and heart, Mr Inbetween is a must-watch. Let Me Stop You There is the perfect example of what the show can do and how it keeps pushing the boundaries of what’s expected from a crime drama. Ray Shoesmith might not be the most likable character in TV, but he’s definitely one of the most fascinating.
