Murder, Mystery and My Family is a true crime documentary series from the BBC, now in its fourth season. Each episode follows a case in which a crime was committed and the convicted party has claimed their innocence for years. The case is presented to a new team of two criminal barristers who will review the evidence, investigate the remaining leads and engage with the convicted individual and their families to decide whether the conviction should be overturned.

In Season 4 Episode 8, the team of barristers investigate the case of a man who was convicted for the murder of a teenage girl in the early 1980s. The evidence against the man is mostly circumstantial, but forensic investigators claim that a strand of hair found on the victim's body matches the defendant's hair.

The team begins by interviewing the victim's family and friends to build a picture of her life before the murder. They discover that the victim had a boyfriend at the time of her death, who had been seen arguing with her in the street just before she was killed. The boyfriend had previously been questioned by police but had an alibi for the time of the murder.

The barristers also speak to the defendant's family and friends to gather information about his whereabouts on the day of the murder. They find several inconsistencies in the prosecution's timeline of events leading up to the murder, and evidence that suggests the defendant was elsewhere at the time of the crime.

As the investigation progresses, the barristers discover a crucial piece of evidence that had been previously overlooked by investigators: a witness who claims to have seen the victim arguing with a man who matches the description of the victim's boyfriend. The barristers conduct further interviews with the witness and track down other witnesses who were present on the day of the murder, piecing together a timeline of events that suggests the boyfriend may have had a stronger motive for killing the victim than the defendant.

The team also takes a closer look at the forensic evidence used to convict the defendant. They find that the hair strand found on the victim's body may not have come from the defendant at all, and that the forensic examiner may have made errors in their analysis of the strand.

As the barristers prepare their case to submit to the Criminal Cases Review Commission, they must weigh the evidence they have gathered against the original trial, considering both the strengths and weaknesses of each argument. In the end, they must decide whether the case is strong enough to warrant an appeal and convince the commission to reopen the case.

Murder, Mystery and My Family continues to deliver compelling cases that highlight the flaws of the justice system and the importance of reviewing cases even after a conviction. Season 4 Episode 8 is no exception, as the team of barristers take a fresh look at an old case and unravel new evidence that suggests the wrong person may have been convicted.
