Ep 1. The Mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle

  • August 4, 2020

Mystery Lab is a Brazilian reality show that explores various mysteries and phenomena, presenting scientific explanations and experiments in a fun and engaging way. The first episode of the show, titled 'The Mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle', delves into the enigma surrounding an area in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean where several ships and airplanes have disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

The episode is hosted by Felipe Castanhari, a Brazilian writer and YouTuber who serves as a charming and knowledgeable guide throughout the investigation. He introduces the topic by sharing some of the most baffling cases of missing vessels in the Bermuda Triangle, such as the Flight 19 incident in 1945, where a group of five U.S. Navy Avengers went missing during a routine training exercise.

To shed light on these disappearances, Felipe visits several experts and scientists who offer different theories about what could be happening in the Triangle. He first meets with Dr. Paulo de Souza, a researcher at the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), who explains how the strong magnetic fields in the area could interfere with electronic devices, causing navigational errors and equipment failures.

Next, Felipe travels to Miami to talk to a retired Air Force colonel named Tom Manger, who has studied the Bermuda Triangle for decades. Colonel Manger shares his own hypothesis, which involves massive clouds known as "hole-punch" or "fallstreak" clouds. He believes that these formations can create powerful and unpredictable winds that could have caused some of the planes to crash.

Felipe then invites a team of engineers and physicists from Brazil's Federal University of Santa Catarina to perform a series of experiments aimed at recreating the conditions of the Triangle. They build a replica of a plane and expose it to different types of magnetic fields to see how they affect its navigation. They also use a wind tunnel to simulate the effects of hole-punch clouds, creating some impressive visuals in the process.

Throughout the episode, Felipe injects humor and playful banter to keep the audience engaged, while still maintaining a respectful and curious approach to the subject matter. He also includes animated segments that illustrate some of the more fantastical theories about the Triangle, such as portals to other dimensions and UFOs.

Overall, the first episode of Mystery Lab is an entertaining and informative dive into the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle. While it doesn't necessarily solve the puzzle once and for all, it provides enough scientific insights and experiments to suggest that there might be more rational explanations than supernatural forces at play. It sets the tone for the rest of the series, showcasing the show's blend of education, humor, and playful curiosity.
