In this episode of National Hockey League: Classic Games, we go back in time to the Division Semifinals Game 3 between the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames. The Oilers were led by their superstar forward Wayne Gretzky, who was having yet another outstanding season, racking up 183 points in just 80 games. The Flames, meanwhile, had a potent offense of their own, led by Joe Mullen, who had scored 47 goals in the regular season.
The series was tied at one game apiece heading into this crucial Game 3, which was being played at the Olympic Saddledome in Calgary. The Flames were hoping to take advantage of their home ice and take a series lead, while the Oilers were looking to steal a game on the road and take control of the series.
The game got off to a fast and physical start, with both teams trading hits and chances. The Flames got on the board first, with a goal from defenseman Jamie Macoun midway through the first period. But the Oilers responded quickly, with a goal from Jari Kurri just a minute later to tie the game at 1-1.
The rest of the first period saw plenty of end-to-end action, with both teams getting their fair share of chances. But the score remained tied heading into the second period.
The second period was where things started to get interesting. The Flames came out firing, with two quick goals from Joe Mullen and Jim Peplinski to take a 3-1 lead. But the Oilers refused to go away quietly, and responded with a power play goal from Mark Messier to cut the lead to 3-2.
The rest of the period saw both teams trading chances, with plenty of hits and scrums along the way. But neither team was able to find the back of the net, and the score remained 3-2 in favor of the Flames heading into the third period.
The third period was a tense and nervous affair for both teams, as the stakes were high and every mistake could be costly. The Oilers were desperate for a goal to tie the game, while the Flames were trying to hold on to their slim lead.
With just over six minutes left in the game, the Oilers finally got the goal they were looking for, with a beautiful tic-tac-toe passing play that ended with a goal from Kurri to tie the game at 3-3. The Oilers were fired up, and looked like they might be able to steal a game on the road.
But the Flames refused to give up, and continued to press for the go-ahead goal. With just under two minutes left in the game, they got their wish, with a goal from Hakan Loob to give them a 4-3 lead.
The Oilers pulled their goaltender in a desperate attempt to tie the game, but the Flames held strong and were able to hold on for the win. The Saddledome erupted in celebration, as the Flames took a 2-1 series lead and looked to be in control heading into Game 4.
This was a classic playoff game between two bitter rivals, with plenty of drama, intensity, and emotion. It was a game that showcased the best of what the NHL has to offer, and is a must-watch for any hockey fan.
