Set in ancient China, Oh My General [OmU] is a romance, comedy and action-packed show that follows the story of a woman warrior named Ye Zhao who defies the traditional gender norms of her time and becomes a general. In season 1 episode 1 named Episode 1, we are introduced to Ye Zhao and her life as a hardcore warrior.
The episode starts with Ye Zhao leaving the battlefield to attend her grandfather's funeral. We quickly learn through flashbacks that Ye Zhao's grandfather was the one who taught her martial arts and how to fight alongside men. Her grandfather's lessons were so valuable to Ye Zhao that she broke with tradition and joined the army, a field that was strictly for men only. We also learn that she is a skilled fighter and a well-respected general in the army.
When Ye Zhao returns to her hometown for the funeral, she discovers that her grandfather's will has a loophole that could potentially put her and her family in trouble. The will states that if Ye Zhao fails to find a husband by her next birthday, she would lose the family property. Ye Zhao, being the strong and independent woman that she is, doesn't want to get married as she feels that marriage would hinder her career. However, she has no choice and decides to go along with the plan and find a suitable husband before her next birthday.
With the help of her aunt, Ye Zhao embarks on a journey to find a husband. Her aunt chooses three men for Ye Zhao to meet, but she rejects them all for different reasons. Ye Zhao then meets a young man named Han Shuo, whom she teaches martial arts while simultaneously getting to know him. Han Shuo is a scribe and not exactly the kind of man Ye Zhao is used to, but she finds herself drawn to him nevertheless.
Meanwhile, in the army, Ye Zhao's second in command, General Huang, is angry with Ye Zhao for leaving the battlefield without notifying him. He is also jealous of the attention Ye Zhao receives from their superior. General Huang is a ruthless man who covets Ye Zhao's position as head of the army, and he will stop at nothing to take it from her.
Throughout the episode, we see the tension build between Ye Zhao and General Huang. He tries to undermine her authority at every turn, but Ye Zhao refuses to be intimidated and stands up to him. She even saves his life when he is about to be attacked by a group of assassins.
The episode ends with Ye Zhao receiving a letter from the imperial court, summoning her to the capital for a meeting with the emperor. This comes as a surprise to Ye Zhao, as she has never received any invitations like this before. It leaves the audience wondering what the emperor wants from her, and what dangers and opportunities await her in the capital.
Overall, the episode sets a strong foundation for the rest of the series. The characters are full of depth, and the plot is engaging, with plenty of action and romance. Ye Zhao is a brilliant character, confident and strong, and it will be interesting to see her navigate the challenges that come her way. With its mix of humor, romance, and action, Oh My General [OmU] promises to be a must-watch for fans of Chinese historical dramas.
