RED BIRD is a short film created by Misti Boland and Jeremy Osbern in 2016. Described as a neo-western, the film tells the story of a young woman named Leah, who embarks on a journey to avenge her father's death. The film opens on a desolate, barren landscape, with Leah (played by writer/director Misti Boland) tending to her father's grave. As she prepares to leave, she is approached by a mysterious figure on horseback (played by Robert Longstreet), who warns her of the dangers that lie ahead.
Despite the stranger's warnings, Leah is determined to seek revenge against the gang responsible for her father's death. Armed with a rifle and a horse, she sets out into the wilderness, tracking her targets across treacherous terrain. Along the way, she faces a series of obstacles, from the harsh elements of the desert to the ruthless outlaws she crosses paths with.
The film unfolds in a series of tense, suspenseful scenes that slowly reveal more about Leah's backstory and motivations. We learn that Leah's father was a respected lawman, and that his death at the hands of the gang has left her with a deep sense of purpose and a thirst for justice. As she moves closer to her goal, she must confront some difficult moral choices, as well as the physical challenges of surviving alone in the wilderness.
One of the standout features of RED BIRD is its stunning cinematography. Shot entirely on location in the American Southwest, the film captures the stark beauty of the desert landscape in breathtaking detail. From the rolling dunes to the towering red rock formations, the scenery plays a major role in the film, heightening the sense of isolation and danger faced by Leah on her journey.
Equally impressive is the film's sound design, which incorporates a haunting, evocative score by composer Amos Cochran. From the mournful strings that accompany Leah's moments of reflection to the driving rhythms of the action scenes, the music adds a powerful emotional dimension to the story.
Despite its short run time of just 20 minutes, RED BIRD packs a powerful punch, thanks to its compelling lead performance, strong direction, and top-notch production values. Whether you're a fan of the western genre or just appreciate well-crafted storytelling, this atmospheric and suspenseful film is well worth a watch.
