Ep 3. Dorset

Richard Wilson On The Road is a travelogue featuring the Scottish actor Richard Wilson exploring the UK's lesser-known roads and attractions. In the third episode of the first season, Richard heads to the south coast of England, specifically Dorset, to discover what makes this county so special.

Richard starts his journey in the charming market town of Wimborne Minster, famous for its 12th-century church and medieval architecture. He then moves on to Wareham, a small town with a fascinating history dating back to Saxon times. Here, he visits the ruins of the Wareham Walls, which were built in the 9th century to defend against Viking raids.

After exploring Wareham, Richard drives to the stunning Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its dramatic rock formations and fossils dating back millions of years. He visits the iconic Durdle Door, a natural limestone arch that has become an icon of the Dorset coastline. Richard takes in the breathtaking views of the arch and the crashing waves below before continuing his journey.

Next, Richard ventures to Lyme Regis, a picturesque seaside town popular with both tourists and locals. Here, he meets with a local fisherman to learn about the traditional methods of fishing and sample some of the freshest seafood imaginable. Richard then takes a stroll along the seafront, admiring the colorful beach huts and listening to the sound of the waves.

Moving inland, Richard visits the charming village of Cerne Abbas, famous for its hillside chalk figure known as the Cerne Abbas Giant. This prehistoric figure, which stands over 55 meters tall, is believed to be a symbol of fertility and has attracted visitors to the area for centuries.

Richard's final stop is the historic town of Sherborne, whose rich architectural heritage includes a magnificent Abbey, an imposing castle and medieval timber-framed buildings. Here, Richard meets with a local historian to learn about the town's fascinating history and explore its many attractions.
