In the premiere episode of SMILF, titled "A Box of Dunkies and Two Squirts of Maple Syrup," we are introduced to Bridgette Bird, a young single mom from South Boston who is struggling to make ends meet. Bridgette is played by Frankie Shaw, who also created the series. She delivers a fantastic performance from the start, showcasing Bridgette's resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

The episode begins with Bridgette waking up early and sneaking out of her sleeping son's room to take a shower. We then see her rush off to work at a bar, where she waits tables and tries to make tips. The scenes in the bar introduce us to Bridgette's boss and co-workers, who serve as important secondary characters throughout the season.

After work, Bridgette goes to pick up her toddler son Larry (played by twins Alexandra and Anna Reimer) from his father Rafi (Miguel Gomez), who seems to be somewhat unreliable and immature. We also learn that Bridgette is trying to make it as a basketball coach and she has a passion for the sport. When she sees a flyer for a coaching gig at a local gym, she decides to go for it.

The rest of the episode follows Bridgette as she tries to get the coaching job, while also dealing with the realities of being a single mom. She has to navigate a difficult relationship with her own mother Tutu (Rosie O'Donnell), who is often critical of her and her choices. Tutu is an interesting character, who has her own troubles and backstory. We get the sense that she loves Bridgette and Larry, but she is also flawed and has made some questionable decisions in the past.

One of the standout scenes in the episode is when Bridgette takes Larry to Dunkin' Donuts for breakfast. She has no money and can only afford to get him a box of donuts and some maple syrup. The scene is both heartwarming and heartbreaking, as we see the bond between mother and son, but also the difficulties they face.

Throughout the episode, we get a sense of Bridgette's struggles, both financially and emotionally. She is a complex character, who is both tough and vulnerable. The show does a fantastic job of portraying her as a real person, with real problems and flaws.

The first episode is well-written and well-directed. The show has a gritty feel, but also has moments of humor and heart. The performances are all top-notch, especially Shaw's. She has a natural charisma and presence, and it's easy to root for her. These characters feel like people you might meet in real life, which is a testament to the show's authenticity.

In conclusion, SMILF's first episode is a fantastic introduction to the series. It sets up the characters and their relationships, while also establishing the show's unique tone and perspective. If you're looking for a grounded and realistic portrayal of a young single mom trying to make it in the world, look no further than SMILF.
