In State of Happiness season 1 episode 5, titled "Dirdal Valley," the residents of Stavanger are in a state of shock following the devastating news of the Kinnevik plane crash that took the lives of many of their friends and colleagues. While everyone is struggling to process the tragedy, Christian is still focused on his job at Phillips Petroleum and the task of bringing Norwegian oil to the market. He's excited to receive a call from John Freeman, the head of Phillips Petroleum, congratulating him on the success of the drilling operation, but his joy is short-lived when he realizes that Freeman is only concerned with the political tensions between Norway and the United States.

Meanwhile, Johanne is still grappling with her feelings for Christian, and when she sees him at a gathering, she tries to approach him, but he seems more preoccupied with talking to Angela, who seems equally smitten with him. Johanne decides to take a break from Stavanger and head to Dirdal Valley, a beautiful area known for its natural beauty and hiking trails. She meets a friendly local named Sverre, who offers to show her around the valley.

As they hike through the stunning landscape, Johanne learns about the history of the area and how the people of Dirdal Valley have been fighting for years to protect their land from development. Sverre introduces her to a group of locals who are actively involved in the campaign to stop the construction of a hydroelectric power plant. Johanne is inspired by their passion and determination and decides to stay in Dirdal Valley to help them in their fight.

Back in Stavanger, Christian is feeling increasingly frustrated with John Freeman's orders to prioritize the interests of the United States over Norway. He decides to take matters into his own hands and plans to approach Eldar, the Minister of Industry, with a proposal to bring Norwegian oil and gas to the market independently. But Eldar is skeptical of Christian's plan and warns him of the consequences of going against American interests.

As tensions between the two countries continue to rise, Johanne and Sverre organize a peaceful protest in the heart of Stavanger to draw attention to the plight of Dirdal Valley and the need to protect Norway's natural resources. Christian attends the protest and sees Johanne for the first time in days, and he realizes his feelings for her are stronger than ever.

As the episode comes to a close, it's unclear what the future holds for Stavanger and the people of Dirdal Valley. Will Christian's plan to bring Norwegian oil and gas to the market independently succeed, or will he be forced to fall in line with John Freeman's orders? And will Johanne be able to make a difference in her fight to protect Dirdal Valley, or will she be defeated by those who seek to exploit Norway's natural resources? Only time will tell in the State of Happiness season 1 episode 5, "Dirdal Valley."
